Nokia Betalabs releases Data Counter app for Lumia Windows Phones . . .

Nokia Betalabs just released a much-wanted “Counters” app for Lumia Windows Phones, which helps you track your data usage along with calls and messages.
It’s pretty easy to use, and all you have to do is add in your monthly data restrictions, and the app will warn you when you’re nearing it along with other things. Interestingly, this feature is built into Windows Phone 8 as “DataSense” but it’s nice to see Nokia bring it down to Windows Phone 7 devices.
Counters main features:
  • set limits for calls, messaging, mobile data
  • change start of the counting period
  • see top contacts
There are some limitations Counters have at the moment:
  • Counters app requires particular phone software. You can check operating system version in Settings>about>more information>”OS version”. You should have either 8773 or 8779 in the string. Check for updates here.
  • there are no notifications when set limit is achieved (will come later)
  • conference calls are not counted properly
  • not possible to set data limit counter with a fractional part (i.e. not possible to set 1.5GB limit)
Available over at the Nokia BetaLabs link below (PSA: You’ll need to sign in with your Nokia account).

Microsoft Surface to officially release this October 26th

Microsoft has finally confirmed the release date of their Surface tablet, and it’s October 26th, which is also the same day Windows 8 releases.

This means there’s still another three months before we see it though:
“The next version of our operating system, Windows 8, will be generally available on October 26, 2012. At that time, we will begin selling the Surface, a series of Microsoft-designed and manufactured hardware devices.”
The 10.6-inch display tablet runs Windows RT, a tablet-version of Windows 8 with Metro-styled app. No word on where exactly this thing will be released on said date, but I’m guessing the US and UK? The Intel-powered more-expensive Surface pro will come along about 90 days later apparently. Still no word on an actual price, either.
Hopefully we’ll see it over at this side of the planet too.

Apple reveals ‘Purple’ iPhone prototype to prove they didnt copy Sony. ..

Along with the previously seen iPhone and iPad prototypes, in their trial against Samsung, Apple has revealed their “Purple” prototype that was made back in August 2005, and eventually led to the iPhone’s current design.

The prototypes inspired by Sony were an “enjoyable side project” that came later apparently. As you might already know, Samsung is claiming Apple was inspirted by Sony’s designs, so for the Korean manufacturer to be inspired by Apple’s designs, isnt a big deal.
Eh, atleast this case is bringing some fun designs and prototypes to light.

HTC shuts down South Korea Office . . ..

Taiwanese manufacturer HTC, has chosen to shut down their offices in South Korea, after tough competition from local manufacturers like Samsung and LG.

HTC struggled with low handset sales in the country, and as such has decided to close their office in order to “streamline operations” and improve efficiency. “This is a hard decision that has direct impact on people who have contributed to the growth HTC has experienced the past several years,” said the company in an official statement. Korean vendors like Samsung, LG and Pantech had secured 90 percent of the local market, whereas HTC had a 2 percent share last year, which dropped to just 1 percent in 2012′s first quarter.
This comes after the company closed their offices in Brazil too, after their marketshare there dropped to under 1 percent. Shame really, because the company’s new One Series of devices are quite fantastic compared to most other Android devices out there. Hopefully they’ll do better in other markets to overcome this loss.

Samsung working on dual core ‘Odyssey’ & ‘Marco’ Windows Phone 8 devices. .

Samsung has apparently revealed two potential Windows Phone 8 devices in the court documents submitted in their vs Apple trial this week.

The documents show a Samsung “Odyssey” and “Marco” Windows Phone 8 device, both marked as running on Qualcomm’s MSM8960 chipset which is a dual core 1.5GHz system-on-chip. Microsoft has been using the same processor to test Windows Phone 8 apparently, so this is interesting stuff.
The Samsung Odyssey is described as an “iconic smartphone” and features a 4.65 inch Super AMOLED display at HD resolution with an 8 megapixel camera at the back, and NFC support. The Samsung Marco features a 4 inch S-AMOLED display at WVGA resolution and a 5 megapixel camera at the back.
Both devices might support LTE, and are scheduled to launch in Q4 2012. Looks like Samsung is taking WP8 really seriously then eh? Nokia might have some competition, from the manufacturer that stole many of crown from them.

Samsung Galaxy S III now available in Brown, Red, Black & Titanium Grey

Samsung announced today that the Galaxy S III will now be available in three more colors in addition to their Pebble Blue and White colors. Say hello to the shades of Amber Brown, Garnet Red, Sapphire Black and Titanium Grey.

The descriptions for the new colors go along the lines of:
Amber Brown*: Inspired by the mysterious and unique gem, which was believed to sustain the secrets of the earth inside it. The deep, rich colour of Amber Brown redefines the classic colour and emphasizes the beauty of the advanced organic design of the GALAXY S III.

Garnet Red*: Rare and special, the gemstone Almandite Garnet was worn as an amulet by the ancient Egyptians who believed the stone contained protective powers. Garnet Red holds the delicateness and elegance of Almandite Garnet, in line with the GALAXY S III’s soft curves and smooth lines.

Sapphire Black*: A colour that adds the mysterious power of dark stones to the refined, deep sophistication of the colour black, Sapphire Black is inspired by the stones used by the ancient people of India and Persia for protection, with the belief they strengthened one’s willpower.

Titanium Grey*: Inspired by the colour grey as a symbol for intelligence, insight and curiosity, all of which are embodied within the design of the GALAXY S III. Titanium Grey expresses the feeling of modernity and wisdom bringing a futuristic element to the handset.
Samsung’s made a big deal about how their Galaxy S III and the “TouchWiz Nature UX” followed a nature theme, and similarly the new colors are apparently “inspired by nature.”
No word on when or where these new color variants will be available unfortunately. More info over at Samsung’s blog post at the link below.

Supposed Images of HTC’s new 10 inch Tablet Leaked

HTC has been quiet in the tablet scene lately, but according these pictures it looks like we might expect a new one from the manufacturer soon.

No details on specs but the tablet looks like it has a slim design in a white casing, with a new screen layout having about an inch of blank bezel at the front below the screen, that holds a front facing camera. Even the rear camera is placed at the bottom of the back panel instead of the top, which is new.

Rumors are HTC might announce a One X+ and One S+, both with NVIDIA’s more beefier Tegra 3+ processors so that might be what’s under this 10 inch Android tablet?

Samsung market value drop by $12 billion after Apple lawsuit ruling. . .

Ouch. Samsung shares apparently dropped a massive 7.5 percent today, after the verdict on their case against Apple found them at fault.

Samsung has to pay Apple over $1.05 billion but the real problem for the manufacturer, is the $12 billion in market value lost. Apple’s trading on the other hand, went from $663 to $679. Samsung has been very expressive about how they feel about the verdict, with a press statement and internal memoreleased vowing to “continue to do our utmost until our arguments have been accepted.
Doesnt look like stockholders are very happy about it though. And with Samsung appealing the ruling and more drama coming soon, I’d imagine their stock price is going to take a massive hit. Bad times for the Korean manufacturer.

Twelve Not-So-Well-Known Improvements Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Brings About To Devices . .

Enough has been written about Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and how awesome the revamped notification bar and Project Butter is. We won’t deny it; they are awesome. However, a lot hasn’t been written about the smaller changes the Jelly Bean brings about. Having using Stock Jelly Bean for a month, here is a list (in no particular order) of all the smaller changes that Jelly Bean brings over Ice Cream Sandwich:
1. Super Easy Screenshot Sharing

Easy Screenshot Share
This one is for all us bloggers. We end up having to take a lot of screenshots. Now, when you take a screenshot, a thumbnail of it appears in the Notification Bar. We can the use two fingers sliding down to expand this and see it larger. Here there is a Share option by which you can share to Dropbox, Flickr or all your other services. Super convenient.
2. Differentiates Between Regular WiFi Connection & Mobile Hotspot WiFi Connection

HotSpot Data Usage
Android lets you keep certain activities, like downloading large files or syncing email, for WiFi Only. This means whenever you connect to a WiFi network, this takes place. Earlier, even if you connected to a WiFi Hotspot, this happened, which is problematic for those with a monthly limit. Now, Jelly Bean can tell that you are connecting to a Mobile Hotspot and holds itself back. Very cool.
3. Greatly Improved Default E-Mail App That Is Actually Usable
email3
Until now, Android has had great GMail app and a very average Regular Email App. It was a pain to use, was not easy to browse through. Now, the Email App has got Updated and is very similar to the GMail App.
email2
Further, you now have more control over the Auto Sync options of the Email Client.
email1
4. Swipe Down To Delete Image In Gallery: VERY VERY USEFUL

The Gallery seems similar to stock ICS, but when you pinch out of a picture, you get a film strip of all your images, like in Sense 4.0. You can swipe and delete any of these images now. This is great for organizing your Gallery, and we can’t get enough of it.
Check out screnshots of this in action:
gallery1
gallery2
gallery3
5. Default App Selection is Less of a Pain:

Earlier, when you selected an event like a YouTube Link, Play Store Link or even Calling Someone, if multiple options existed in your apps, Android would show an ugly list asking which one you wanted to use to do the action. With Jelly Bean, this has gone from a list to a grid of icons.
Screenshot_2012-08-02-20-46-14
DefaultApp2
Also, earlier if you accidentally touched something in the list, which happened quite often, it would immediately open in that. Now, you need to first touch the app of choice, and then touch whether this will be the default app always, or just this once.
6. Smart Face Unlock
face unlock 1
Face Unlock was a gimmicky feature introduced in ICS, which could be easily fooled by using a picture of the person.
Now, you can enable something called Likeness Checking, where you have to blink once to prove you are a real person.
Face unlock 2
While we still think its a gimmick, it will sooth the nerves of Security Nuts.
7. Avoid Poor Wi-Fi, 5Ghz Only

Avoid Poor Connection
As more and more WiFi devices pollute out air waves, especially on the 2.5Ghz end of the spectrum, line quality may not be great. If you are connected to a WiFi access point of poor quality, the phone can realize this and disconnect from it. Also, you can connect to WiFi points on only the 5Ghz range if you like, for better network quality.
5Ghz
8. WPS Connect Added
WPS
You can now connect to devices that do not broadcast their SSID publicly, through WPS aka WiFi Protected Setup, a lot more easily. One has to select the option and then key in the code at both ends.
WPS2
9. Always Visible Bluetooth Connection

BT Visibility
Until now, Bluetooth could be kept on at all times, but only visible for a certain amount of time. While this is useful for most, since we don’t want people sending us files randomly.
However, for some of us who use BlueTooth amongst multiple devices, if they aren’t paired, we have to keep setting it to visible. Now, you can keep your BT always visible.
10. Easy Uninstall From Notification Bar

AppInfo1
An app bugging you with Notification Bar Spam? Or just want to uninstall an app that has appeared in your Notification Bar? Now by just long pressing on it, you can go to App Info, from there, you can Force Stop or Uninstall it, and can even stop it from being able to use your notification bar.
AppInfo2
11. Disable Developer Options
dev options off
With the advent of ICS: Google added something to the Settings called Developer Options. This was handy for developers, but unfortunately it was active in all ICS devices. This means any normal user could browse their Settings and make changes here, not knowing they could mess things up for them.
In Jelly Bean, Developer Options have an On and Off switch, so users know that enabling this option has its risks and they should be careful.
12. Manage Accounts Signed In To Directly From Settings

settings color
In the default Settings Menu, you can see all the accounts you have signed into and manage them from there. Easier for normal users.
This is in no ways a conclusive list, but is pretty much all of what we could find in our playing around with Jelly Bean. If you find more small changes that it has bought, do not hesitate to let us know in the comments below!
