The Kindle Fire is quite a significant device. Though it is Android based, Amazon have skinned it extensively and haven’t included any official Google Play applications on it. Despite this, the originalKindle Fire sold by the millions, and took up a large chunk of the Android Tablet market. The combination of high specs and ultra cheap pricing was a winning one, and the market agreed. In fact, the Kindle Fire was probably a large driving force behind the Nexus 7.
Amazon’s next Kindle Fire, which is expected to be outed by them quite soon, should once again kindle the 7 inch market and could challenge the Nexus 7′s current position of supremacy. Today we learnt of another interesting tidbit about the next Fire. According to Reuters UK, the next Fire will have Location Capabilities, either through a GPS chip or WiFi Triangulation. Further, Amazon will bypass Google Maps and instead use Nokia Maps.
This will make them the second large brand to drop Google Maps. The first was Apple, who will use their own mapping solution from iOS6. They tied up with Waze to bring Social Mapping to the new version of iOS.
Personally, we are excited about Nokia Maps being available in some form or the other on the Kindle Fire. Admittedly, this is partly because some enterprising individuals will be sure to find a way to port it to other Android Devices. Nokia Maps has international Turn by Turn Navigation, something that Google Maps sorely lacks, especially in India.
Come next Thursday, we will know for sure, when Amazon unveils the next Kindle Fire. Stay Tuned.
