Nokia ensured few people would buy its Windows Phone 7-powered devices when it announced that its Lumia range of smartphones running on Windows Phone 7 would not be upgraded to Windows Phone 8. Everyone assumed that after Windows Phone 8’s launch, current WP7 phones would be passé as they’d just get a complementary WP 7.8 update, not the Windows Phone 8 experience. However, Nokia seems determined to make sure its WP7 smartphone range is not ignored.
Following the introduction of its first Windows 8-powered Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 smartphones at IFA 2012, Nokia has posted on its official blog stating that existing Lumia owners also have plenty to look forward to and are “definitely not being left behind". The post goes on to say that the Lumia 610, Lumia 710, Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 will receive a new, updated user interface, new features, apps and upgrades.

Nokia's WP7 devices to get a WP8-like UI
The upgrades scheduled for the smartphones include the long-awaited ability to send or receive files over Bluetooth. Users will also get a new Start screen with a look familiar to that of Windows Phone 8, a ringtone app maker and a contact sharing app that lets you share your contacts via Bluetooth, in addition to SMS and email.
The new apps for the Lumia that have been launched include Nokia City Lens, which is Nokia’s location-based augmented reality application. Using the phone’s camera viewfinder, Nokia City Lens provides an augmented reality overlay view of buildings and instantly highlights places of interest. Also announced is Nokia Counters, which helps you keep an eye on your phone usage.
Nokia will also bring Cinemagraph and updates to Smart Group Shot to the existing Lumia devices with some additional surprises to make photo shooting and sharing as easy as possible.
Recent updates to the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 handsets include Wi-Fi tethering, which allows you to share your mobile Internet connection with other devices; Flip-to-Silence, which is the ability to silence incoming calls and other notifications by flipping your device face down; and Camera Extras, which adds functionality to the camera app.
Nokia’s recently launched Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 smartphones are its first devices running on the Windows Phone 8 operating system. The Lumia 820 sports a 4.3-inch screen ClearBlack OLED display and comes with high brightness mode and Sunlight Readability Enhancements. It is powered by a 1.5GHz Dual Core Snapdragon S4 processor and runs on a 1650mAh battery with support for Qi wireless charging. It sports an 8MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics.
The Nokia Lumia 920 will pack a Snapdragon S4 processor and a 8.7 megapixel PureView sensor. It packs a new PureMotion HD+ screen with a fast refresh rate and ClearBlack technology, which automatically adjusts the colour tone and brightness of the screen. The phone comes with a 2000mAh battery - the biggest one that Nokia has ever made. The Lumia 920 will come with 7GB of free SkyDrive storage.
