Microsoft India to organise Windows 8 AppFest in Bengaluru on Sep 21

Microsoft India is reaching out to the developer community in India. The company recently announced that Windows 8 AppFest, an app development marathon for its latest operating system, is all set to be held on September 21 and 22, 2012 at the Karnataka Trade Promotion Organisation in Bengaluru.

The 18-hour event will see developers and programmers building and testing apps and ideas for Windows 8, along with help from on-site staff who will assist AppFest participants with preparing their apps for eventual submission to the Windows Store.

Microsoft will also give you an opportunity to have its staff run your app through a series of quality checks in addition to discussing techniques to make your app even better. Developers will be able to submit app ideas in over 20 categories, ranging from Books and reference, Business, Education, Entertainment and Finance to Social, Travel and Sports.

However, Microsoft has a couple of conditions in place: First and foremost, Windows 8 AppFest is an invite-only event. Those interested are asked to register and submit a description of their app on the AppFest website. Another condition is that participants, once invited, would have to carry their own laptops to the event. The laptops need to be loaded with Windows 8 RTM and must have Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2012 installed. Microsoft lets you have a team of up to four people for the event. All team members will have to register individually with the same app idea.

Another developer-friendly event scheduled to be held this month is Facebook Developer World Hack 2012. Part of a global series of events hosted by Facebook throughout August and September, World Hack 2012 will be held in Bengaluru on September 17.

An official blog post on the Facebook Developer blog announcing Hack 2012 states that this is a move to “bring the Facebook Developer story to a new set of cities - homes to some of the world's most vibrant and fast-growing developer communities”. The blog goes on to state that the events are one-day-long each and will take place in 12 cities.

World Hack 2012 will start with a series of technical sessions, where Open Graph, iOS, Android, mobile web, and social game development will be discussed. Following this, Facebook's engineers will elaborate with demos and samples, so that developers jump right into the Hack itself. The post states that the Hack is an eight-hour competition where “you get to demonstrate your newfound skills, with hands-on help from Facebook engineers”. The events will end with awards and team demos for the best apps and projects worked on through the day.

The events are open to all kinds of coders irrespective of their level of experience in developing Facebook apps. Coders who have developed an app for Facebook, which they’d like to distribute or those who have ideas for social apps are also welcome at the events. The events require you to pre-register by paying a nominal fee.
