The verdict is out for the Apple vs Samsung patent infringement case to conclude the three week trial.
The jury has ruled that Samsung did infact infringe on Apple’s patents for their menu bounce-back effect for all 21 of the offending products in question. All but three of Samsung products infringed Apple’s pinch-to-zoom patent. The most dramatic statement was that the Jury believed that Samsung executives either knew or should have known their products infringed on the listed patents. Ouch.
The jury was also against Samsung in regard to Apple’s homescreen GUI on iOS, and the contours of the back of the iPhone. Curiously, in regard to the iPad design patents, the jury ruled that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 did not infringe on the iPad’s design. Did not see that one coming, heh.
In damages, for their various violations, Samsung must pay Apple $1,051,855,000. That’s 1 billion, 51 million 855 thousand dollars. Ouch.
On the other hand, Apple has to pay Samsung absolutely nothing in damages, since the jury ruled that Apple did not infringe upon any of Samsung’s patents with the iPhone 3G and 3GS. More ouch.
Ofcourse Samsung will probably appeal the decision. Still, that’s a massive number to pay. One billion isnt much for Samsung or Apple though, but the damage in reputation might have just been done. Will it adversely affect Samsung or the overall Android scene, well that remains to be seen.
